SMC: Over 160 Chapters, On 6 of 7 Continents

Great news from Social Media Club National:

Social Media Club has experienced a strong period of growth over the last six months – going from 91 chapters in July 2009 to over 160 chapters today (though I suspect there are still some more smaller ones hiding out there somewhere). In fact, we have confirmed sitings of chapters on six of the seven continents on this fine planet of ours (we are coming Antarctica, I promise!!).

Every local chapter is a little different from the next, just as every local neighborhood has its unique flavor. Some use Facebook. Others use Ning. A chapter might user Twitter just to promote their events. Another uses an email service, like iContact. Some love the wiki. Others don’t even know where to find it. This is good. This is a chance for us all to learn. The experiences of each of the chapters has informed our growth along the way and lead us to some important insights we have put to good use in the new site launching on Friday March 12.

We plan to focus on infrastructure in 2010, improving the ways we communicate with one another and helping local chapters find the right path to sustainability fot theit particular needs. We sincerely appreciate everyone who has taken a leadership role in Social Media Club. Your efforts are the reason we exist today and we love you for it. [...]

Location-based services

Here’s Ashlie’s presentation from tonight’s meeting. We hope to post the link to the video soon in case you couldn’t make it out.

Two hours after the meeting, and we’re still getting tweets @SMCColumbia from those who attended. We’re thrilled you all enjoyed the meeting. If you have questions on Gowalla or FourSquare, leave a comment below, or catch up with @ashlieconway or @willimac on twitter.

Let’s spread the word to our small businesses in Columbia! They could use the benefit of more foot traffic, and we LOVE getting deals, points, badgets, and the occasional “elusive” raccoon!

Location-based services: Who, where, and why?

Ever Yelped? Are you a mayor in FourSquare? If these terms are unfamiliar (or even if they are familiar), join us Thursday, February 11th for an introduction and discussion of location-based services.

Will McCain will lead our discussion with a Gowalla primer. Gowalla logoAshlie Conway will also discuss FourSquare and how it can be beneficial for businesses.

Why are location-based services (LBS) important? According to Mashable:

Numbers earlier this week from research firm Gartner agree with this assessment: the number of users of location-based services is set to double to 95.7 million this year, up from 41 million a year ago, which should result in over $2 billion in revenue. With more and more iPhone, Android and mobile apps taking advantage of more readily available GPS and LBS technology, we have to ask: what’s next for location-based services?”

So join in the discussion! We want to hear what services you’ve used, which you like, and which you don’t.
