SMC Question of the Week: What makes a community real?
The sheer number of community sites online is both inspiring and staggering. It’s easy to sign up for a social site that seems like a good & relevant place to go at the time, but then falls into the category of once-visited site. With an ever growing number of social sites to join, read, or create, the actual community feel can go by the wayside, victim to short attention span, or simply spreading content too thin. Or maybe the site isn’t as conducive to interaction as hoped.
So we ask you this week, What makes a community real? That is: When does a web site feel like a place to and be, instead of simply a page of information to visit?
Can you give examples of social interactions or technological and user features that create an actual feeling of connectedness with others?
