People have asked: How do I find other local Twitter users?
The quickest way to do this without downloading a 3rd-party application is to use the “near:” query in twitter search. Here’s how:
(1) Go to http://search.twitter.com
(2) In the search box, type “near:” followed by the location you want to search for.
Example #1
Search for a CITY: “near:columbiasc” to find tweets in Columbia, SC.
Note: you do NOT place a comma nor a space preceding the state.
Example #2
Search for a ZIP CODE: “near:29063″ will find tweets in Irmo, SC.
(3) After you’ve submitted your search, there is a drop-down field under the Google Map. Use this to increase or decrease the size of the area that will be searched. i.e. “Within XX kms”
Example #3
Combine step (2) and (3) by searching for something like this: “near:29201 within:25km”
Mandi Engram says: You can also find people in Columbia on Twitter by typing this into Google search: site:twitter.com location Columbia, SC
I say, check the search engines like http://www.twellow.com/ & http://www.trackvia.com/misc/media-database.htm. These provide a great easy way to locate folks by location AND expertise.
